From Amelia, the photographer:
With engagement shoots, it always starts with a radiantly happy couple. From there we establish a mood for the pictures. For Skye & John’s portraits, we wanted a modern updated melange of studio-style imagery and classic outdoor portraits in the wild of Virginia. This was not just for a mix of styles that suited their personalities, it was quite practical. Virginia in the spring can be quite chilly and blustery. By starting in the studio, we eased into pictures in a more comfortable, warm environment. Another consideration for engagement pictures is what the couple will wear. Wardrobe is crucial for pictures! What one wears becomes a focal feature in a photograph and the wardrobe needs to tell the same story as the emotions we are evoking: romantic, delicate and cohesive.
From John, the groom:
I’ve always been more drawn to candid photography, when you can capture a “genuine” moment. There’s a warmth and an honesty to a picture of people who aren’t aware (or perhaps less aware) that a camera is pointed in their direction. Which is why my personal favorite pictures from this shoot are the ones where Skye and I are laughing in between the serious shots. They contain moments that I can remember and evoke an emotion I can feel.
