Perhaps you did the big white wedding thing for your first marriage, or maybe you simply went down to City Hall…. or Vegas. If your first wedding was not what you had hoped it would be for any reason, your second union is your chance to craft the nuptials and reception you have always wanted. Go big and crazy, or small and intimate… or something in between. Get inspired with some of our best alternative ceremony ideas for second marriages, and remember to have fun and do whatever the heck you want!!
Guest Circle Idea
One super-nifty second wedding ceremony idea is to have your guests stand in a circle around you, your partner, and the officiant. Go a step further if desired and instruct your friends and family to stand in a heart shape, which looks awesome if an aerial photographer is an option. (Hello, drone engagement gift.) This is a fabulous way to make your loved ones feel even more involved with your wedding and is ideal for smaller ceremonies.
Including The Kiddos Ideas
Including the children, no matter their age, is a common second wedding practice. Sand ceremonies are a fun way to do this, as it represents the blending of two families in love and devotion.
Unity candles are another family blending option, though you can really use anything you want, from paper chains to jewelry to bottles of wine everyone drinks from, though the latter is best with adult children so you don’t get any “little ‘uns” hammered.
You can also simply have your children escort you down the aisle, which is always ridiculously cute and sweet.
Walking Down The Aisle (Or Not) Ideas
In addition to walking down the aisle with your kids, you can have both of your parents do the trek with you, or skip it entirely. Some couples marrying for the second time walk down the aisle together, or better yet… dance down the aisle together. Sure, this idea may have started on Glee, but it is pretty darn spectacular. It also sets a warm and wonderful tone for the evening.
Bridal Party Ideas
If you want to skip the whole bridal party to-do, you go right ahead – plenty of couples entering their second marriages do this. If you do want a bridal party, it does not even have to be on both sides – have a few or as many people up there as you want. It could make for some very interesting photos! Another idea is to have everyone wear what they would normally wear to a wedding instead of doing the matching dress/tux thing.
Officiant Idea
More and more couples are getting married outside the church and opt for an officiant over a priest or minister. If you are on board with this idea, consider asking a friend or family member to get ordained online. Having someone you cherish marry you to your best friend is a wonderful way to start a new life together.
Another slightly-unconventional officiant idea is to have a ship captain do the honors. If you live near water or have a seafaring friend, this is a fun and interesting way to get hitched.
Second Marriages: Alternative Ceremony Ideas
Again, if you are not particularly religious and do not want to get married in a church, there are all kinds of wonderful locations for your wedding. Have a backyard ceremony if you, your partner, or a loved one has an extensive property, or consider the neighborhood farm.
A local park is another possibility that may include a pretty gazebo and event area/space. You could also get married at a winery, as many offer event spaces for weddings and other big events.
Other ideas include ski resorts, tropical beaches, and national and state parks. The latter is ideal for a camping weekend wedding.
Remember… do what feels right to you and your partner – that’s what matters most! Good luck, and have fun!
