Wedding Designer Feature: Mira Zwillinger

SS2016 NEW YORK BRIDAL

What’s better than two awesome bridal designers working together? How about a mother-daughter team like Mira and Lihi Zwillinger? The duo collaborates on every wedding dress design from start to finish and credits their partnership as being a major part of the company’s three decades of success.

How it All Began for Mira Zwillinger

At a very early age, Mira Zwillinger was immersed in the world of fashion. Her mother, a designer herself, taught Mira to sew, leading to a lifelong love for design. As Mira grew up, she continued her craft by serving as a private couture evening and cocktail designer for elite clients around Tel Aviv.

In 1991, she officially founded her own company and her studio’s reputation continued to grow. Word of mouth spread all over Israel, and she gained even more high society clients. By 2006, she was named Designer of the Year and was one of the most sought-after designers in the country.

How Mira Zwillinger Got into the Bridal Industry

As Mira’s company continued to grow, she decided to pass down her passion for fashion to her youngest daughter, Lihi. As a young girl, Lihi traveled the world with her mom and helped choose fabrics and buttons for her designs.

After graduating from the Shenkar College of Design in 2011, Lihi officially joined her mom’s atelier team. She designed her own wedding dress and immediately fell in love with the process of bridal design. The dress gained local and international attention, so the mother-daughter duo decided to create their own bridal collection and never looked back.

Today, Lihi remains the lead designer and brand manager for the brand. She and Mira work together from the very beginning of each design: from coming up with the design concept to choosing the fabrics and embellishments. In the end, some of the most discussed (and sometimes debated) gowns end up being their favorite in the entire collection.

The Mira Zwillinger Empire Today

Brides can find Mira Zwillinger gowns in more than 30 boutiques around the world, including nearly a dozen countries. All gowns are custom made-to-measure and start at $9,000. There’s a little something for every type of bride—designs range from timeless fairy tale to modern chic to elegant glamor.

For the bride who loves options, the duo offers two different bridal collections: the traditional Mira Zwillinger line and the ready-to-wear couture line called Zwillinger’s. This new line is dedicated to all the events leading up to the wedding day—from the bachelorette party to the bridal brunch. Each style is made in limited quantities, so it’s exclusive to only a few brides.

Only the most stunning fabrics are used to create each made-to-measure gown: lace, chiffon, taffeta, silk crepe, and brocade—to name a few. One of the most interesting techniques used in the studio is its one-of-a-kind fabric collaboration. Combining multiple materials and elements, many of the fabrics have been altered to create new, unique textiles. Mira says it’s as if each garment is the company’s own little secret. Once the fabrics are crafted, the custom gowns are brought to life through handmade embroidery, beading, ornamentation, and other intricate techniques.

Mira and Lihi look just about everywhere for inspiration. They dive into researching what’s trendy in fashion (especially street fashion), but inspiration can also come from a painting, a song, or even a shape or texture that catches their attention. Beyond bridal gowns, the brand sells an array of accessories starting at $2,500. Brides can find veils, overskirts, jewelry, gloves, and more.

The designer duo pulled inspiration from nature for the Spring 2022 collection titled “Winds of Wonder”. The collection, all about renewal and rebirth, boasts dreamy skirts, leaf-like accents, and wildflower ornaments.

The Terra tulle gown features 3D embroidered petals and a beautiful asymmetrical sleeve that detaches. The Aneta gown is ultra-feminine with laser-cut floral appliques over delicate Chantilly lace. We love the fitted bodice and detachable drop-shoulder with 3D lace.

The Suri A-line gown is a fairytale dream. The deep v-neck adds a hint of sexy, and the nature motif comes full circle through gradient florals and an embroidered leaf pattern. The detachable, ruffled tulle sleeves are the cherry on top!

If you’re going to the chapel to get married, then these picks from the Zwillinger’s line are for you. In the latest limited-edition collection, brides can shop an array of bridal tops, pants, dresses, and more. The high-neck, long-sleeve Alesa set is the perfect pick for a non-traditional bride or a bachelorette party. We love the lacy texture of the top and matching high-waisted shorts.

For something silky, try the Heidi set: a textured, silk-Mikado cami with a floral pattern and matching shorts. Looking for a dress, but want something modern and chic? Go for Giorgi, the crepe mini dress with lace and 3D flowers. It’s sleek and elegant but with an edge—perfect for a civil ceremony.

Many celebs have fallen in love with Mira Zwillinger gowns. Daisy Jenks wore a strapless, floral applique and tulle gown for her nuptials to Charlie van Straubenzee (aka Prince Harry’s childhood bff). Singer Leona Lewis opted for a stunning spaghetti strap gown with a lace-embellished bodice and tulle skirt. It was the very first gown she tried on and she loved how light and feminine it was.

For her Hawaiian wedding to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Lauren Hashian rocked a delicate lace and bead embroidered gown with a plunging neckline and open back. It was a stunning choice for their beachfront ceremony!
