I love weddings. I’m the girl who tunes into the Today Show only to see the Wedding. And then be late for work because I have to see it all. And I’m not even a girly girl. It is just something about watching two people totally in love, taking a huge life step together that I find irresistible.
Kim and Alex got married on May 17, 2007 in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. What a perfect setting for something that as Kim says, was always meant to be. Here is their story.
Proposal: We met in Mexico in 2001 and we both new that we were meant to be together. We had talked about getting married a few times through the years but no set plan. It wasn’t until one day in 2006 when our 150 lb. black Great Dane named Duke, followed me around the house more than usual with a big smile – it was almost as if he knew what was going on. After a couple of hours went by I finally noticed that Duke had something hanging from his collar – a beautiful sparkling engagement ring. I then looked at Alex, we both laughed as it took so long for me to notice, and he then asked me to marry him.
Ceremony: The ceremony took place on a small private beach in Playacar, Playa del Carmen. It was the perfect setting; white sandy beach, the sun setting in the beautiful blue sky, a steel drum in the background, a simple yet elegant setting where 60 of our dearest friends and family witnessing our vows and then drinks and pictures thereafter.
Reception: We wanted to have a venue where all our friends and family from both Canada and Mexico would feel that it was more like being at our home, so we searched for about a month until we found this amazing house in Playa del Carmen. The house was large with beautiful grounds with a unique cenote – perfect atmosphere for to have the reception and then a relaxing honeymoon. Since we were staying at the house we were able to hire our own caterers, DJ’s, waitstaff etc. to transform the house into an stunning venue. The entire evening was perfect and to make it that more wonderful, our friends surprised us with a 10 piece Mariachi band that topped the evening off.
Most memorable moment: Aside from having our wedding on the beach in one of the nicest spots in Mexico where we first met 6 years prior, we cannot forget one of the best moments of the day. One of our friends knew that we would have loved to have our Great Dane (Duke) be at the wedding as he is part of our family however, it was not possible so he decided to surprise us with locating a local black Great Dane, a “Duke” look a like dog, greet us at that perfect moment when we were walking on the beach, to pose for some pictures with us – it was priceless.
Advice for other brides: My advice would be to make sure that you have the wedding of your dreams and to truly relax, laugh, and enjoy every minute of your day and all the days leading up to your wedding as those memories last a lifetime.
