Destination Wedding Questions: Do You Have To Bring A Gift?

If you’re attending a destination wedding for the first time and are wondering if bringing a gift is necessary, you’re hardly alone. Whether it’s a friend or family member’s first, second, third, or sixth marriage, you’ll be relieved to know showing up “empty-handed” is not a big deal. This is especially true if you’re traveling a great distance.

Nice, But Not Expected

Yes, bringing a gift to a wedding or sending one through the mail is always a welcome and lovely gesture. However, if you’re traveling far and wide to see the couple get hitched, no one is going to blink twice if you don’t have a gift. If it’s the couple’s second or third wedding and they already have everything they need, you’re in even better shape. You’re paying to be there, and your presence is a wonderful gift in itself.

If You Decide Not To Attend

Should you decide not to attend the wedding in question for whatever reason, it’s very good taste to send a gift. Look at the registry or find a fun “experience” gift the couple will enjoy, such as gift certificates for a favorite spa or discounted ski tickets. Even if you aren’t close with the couple, they still took the time to invite you to the wedding, so a gift is a wonderful way to say thank you for the invite.

Inexpensive Is Okay

If you are attending the wedding and still want to bring a gift, keep in mind you don’t have to spend a lot. Gifts are meant to be from the heart, so if it’s relatively inexpensive but still shows you made an effort, don’t worry ‘bout a thing. The couple will love that you brought them a gift in addition to flying/driving/taking a long train ride to see them get hitched.

Remember, it’s okay not to bring a gift to a destination wedding!
