Your wedding is just a few short weeks away, and you’ve planned some really special things for your big day. Maybe you’ve even included a few very special details into your attire for your day. My name is Jessica Hunt, and I’ve been a wedding photographer for eight years. Today I want to talk to you about how to select the most personal details for your wedding day attire and how to request that your photographer capture those details in the best way possible.
First things first, let’s talk about what details ARE. Details can span a number of things! They can be family heirlooms, a loved one’s old handkerchief, beautiful pieces of jewelry, or even a favorite timepiece. They can be a unique look or new fresh apparel idea that is important to you for any reason! Basically, details are the little things that make your wedding day unique or more special for you and your partner.
Now, let’s talk about why the small details you might choose for your wedding day attire are important. If you’re planning your wedding and you’ve incorporated some really special details into your attire, I don’t think I have to tell you why those things are important to you. You know what I mean? You know why you’re wearing a certain pair of earrings or if your partner is carrying a specific timepiece. These little things help to add to the uniqueness of your wedding day and the uniqueness of your love story. You want your wedding day images to give a comprehensive view of your day from top to bottom, and your details that you wear are important in that. They are part of your love story and a part of who you are! Not getting gorgeous photos of them would be an absolute travesty. Especially if you spent time working out what special details to build into your wedding day look.
We know what details are and why you want them photographed, but let’s just pause for a minute and talk about the importance of incorporating details into your wedding day attire if you haven’t already. You may be reading this and thinking to yourself, “oh my goodness, I’m not wearing ANYTHING on my wedding day that sounds like what she’s describing!!” That’s okay, my friend! Don’t stress! Even if the attire that you’re wearing wasn’t handed down from five previous generations in your family or isn’t a special gift from an aunt or uncle, those pieces of your attire are still important to your day’s story. If you chose a certain pair of earrings because they complement the neckline of your gown or a certain pair of cufflinks because they work with the day’s theme, that’s just as important as the other things I’ve been chatting about today. You and your partner are unique and one-of-a-kind. You two and your love have already made your wedding day unique and special just by BEING in love and planning a wedding, so let the pressure fall off your shoulders! That means that anything that you wear on the day you celebrate your forever union is important to capture, because it’s YOU! You and your love are the focus of the wedding day, and you never want to forget all of the little things that you planned out to make sure that your wedding day was as personal to your story as possible.
If you are still planning your wedding day attire, and you’re wondering how you can incorporate some personality or uniqueness to your day, here are a few tips for you. Ask yourself what about your wedding day attire have you not selected yet and how can you make those things reflect the uniqueness of your love story. Maybe consider changing up your shoe choice to reflect your fun bright personality or even adjusting your hairstyle to something a little bit more “you“! Making the details of your wedding day apparel personal and unique to you and your love story will only make those things matter more to you in the end. Incorporating these special little things also help create an environment of truly intentional planning for your wedding day. When you are intentionally planning your wedding day to be centered around your love story and your unique sense of style, there’s no doubt that those things will result in a better wedding day for you and your partner!
Now you know what details are and why they were so important, especially when it comes your wedding day apparel, but how do you ensure that your photographer photographs all of the special little pieces that you’ve decided upon? Well, that’s what I’m here for! Here is a list of all of the things that you should mention to your photographer before the wedding day so they are aware of these special things you’ve planned and ensure they’re not missed!
Main attire: your gown or tux
Complementary attire: shoes, belts, ties, pocket squares, garters
Jewelry: rings, cufflinks, meaningful timepieces
Small details: unique garters, monogrammed socks, embroidered patches on the inside of your gown or suit
Heirlooms: If you’re wearing anything on your wedding day that is important or meaningful for your family or your family’s history. This can be jewelry, but could also be a piece of lace from your mother’s wedding gown wrapped around your bouquet or your great uncle’s engraved flask you’ll carry around on the day
These are just a few things that you should mention to your photographer if you are taking the time to plan out personalized details for your wedding day’s attire. There can be a myriad of other things that may be important to you or personal to you and your partner that you’re wearing or using on your wedding day, too. Be sure to mention those things to your wedding photographer before the wedding day so you don’t miss a photo of them! Anything that’s important to you should be important to your photographer!
Many couples plan various small details, pieces and parts to their wedding day and often fail to tell their wedding vendors about those special little things! Speaking from eight years of experience as a wedding photographer, I know firsthand how easy it is for couples to forget to tell their photographer about something very special that they planned before the wedding. It’s understandable, trust me! You’re planning and doing so much at one time, I get it. I hope that this little list above gives you a good idea of what to remind your photographer of before your wedding day so they don’t miss the special details you’ve built into your wedding day attire. The list above might not cover every little thing you have planned, but it is a good reminder to make sure that your photographer is planned for every little piece of your wedding day!
So now you’re ready! You have some ideas about your personalized wedding day attire for your day and you know what things to mention to your photographer before the wedding. The next step, my friend? Get married!!!
