Wondering what to wear to an upcoming wedding? Whether it is the couple’s’ first, second, or fifth marriage, don’t feel bad if you are stuck for attire ideas. How you should dress depends greatly on the type of wedding. Some are waaaay more casual than others, after all! Rather than calling the busy bride and asking about what you should wear, use the following tips and clues to help yourself out.
The Invitation
Take a good, long look at the invitation. Does it feature highly-formal language? “Flowing” text? Heavy paper? Engraving? None of these things? If the invitation is formal, you can rightfully assume the ceremony will be too. If the invite is goofy or otherwise features funny wording, feel free to go a bit more casual with your outfit.
Indoor Or Outdoor
Review the invitation again to learn where the nuptials will take place. Is the venue indoors or outdoors? If the ceremony is outdoors, avoid wearing clothing the wind will have its way with. Stay clear of heavy clothing if the location is hot or tropical, as well as heels that sink into grass or sand, if applicable. Linens that keep you nice and temperate are your best option for less formal, outdoor affairs in the spring or summer.
Buy Or Rent?

Daytime Vs. Nighttime
Wear more casual clothing if the wedding is during the day, and the opposite if the wedding is in the evening. For example, a lovely floral dress or a skirt and sweater set works well for daytime weddings, as do light-colored suits or button-up shirts with ties and nice slacks. If attending an evening wedding, opt for a tasteful cocktail dress in a darker hue–think of what you would wear to a fancy dinner party and go from there. Dark suits also work well for nighttime weddings.
