Inspired by the gorgeous red dirt, watercolor sunsets and Native American roots of Oklahoma, Hazel and Haze Photography and a group of Oklahoma-based creatives collaborated together to highlight some of the state’s oldest history in the form of a bohemian Southwestern soirĂ©e with incredible textured floral accents, a beautiful lounge table and a lovely cake display! The Gloss Mountains State Park was the perfect backdrop for this shoot and served as a large part of the inspiration. Real-life couple Jhosy and Stuart were officially married in an intimate park ceremony in Enid with only close friends and immediate family in attendance, so it was a treat to participate in this styled shoot!
A bohemian Southwest soiree in Fairview, OK
A few of the unique styled elements we included were the arrowhead place cards with the bride and groom’s names hand lettered on them by Prairie Letter Shop. These arrowheads can be described as the archaic pentagonal shape which dates back hundreds of years when they were used as blades, scrapers, or knives by the early Native Americans.
We also decided instead of incorporating a traditional large Native American headdress, we fashioned a more modern take on a feather headpiece worn by Jhoselyn. We wanted to stick closely to the natural feel of the surroundings when styling the bride and groom and decided to incorporate antique Native American jewelry which was provided by our stylists Danielle and Philip from Jo & June. A little bit of history behind the jewelry… they were a keepsake from Philip’s great grandmother Josephine, who was Native American. His grandmother Josephine was their inspiration for their business name Jo & June.
The dress worn by Jhoselyn features a blunt square edge detailing much like traditional Native American style with some added soft feminine lace textures. The dress was found at a local antique store which we felt added to the unique southwest aesthetic.
The southwest style rugs featured with the tablescape were purchased in Turkey and Pakistan and were hand woven from organic wool elements and provided by Jo & June. The southwest style pillows were handmade by Jo & June from antique Kilim rugs. The gorgeous two tiered table featured in the lounge set up was hand carved in the 1900s.
The Gloss Mountains, the backdrop of our styled session, has many cultural Native American elements including the red dirt and the mesas that tower 150-200 feet above the plains of Oklahoma. The Gloss Mountains have a high concentration of Selenite crystals which is a natural element composed of calcium silicate. Some of the crystals found in this state park are featured on the cake table set up.
Traditional Native American colors include warm red, orange, and yellow hues. We chose to include some of the old Native American colors while also incorporating in some coral and turquoise for a modern twist. Colors play a large part in Native American symbolism and history. The white color in Jhoselyn’s dress symbolizes peace and happiness. Red also symbolizes faith, beauty, and happiness. – Angela, Hazel and Haze Photography
