Second Wedding Planning: What You Need To Know
Planning your second wedding should be a joyful experience, not a stressful one! While stress accompanies the planning of any wedding, you don’t need to get caught up in the differences between your first and second ceremony. Check out a few etiquette tips and enjoy this special time:
The Dress
Yes, it’s totally okay to wear white–it’s your wedding, after all! If you want to pull out all the stops with a big white wedding dress for marriage #2, go for it. This includes a train if you want it. Headpiece options can include a wide-brimmed hat (Duran Duran’s ‘Ordinary World’ video, anyone?), flowers or a tiara.
The Gifts
Is registering appropriate? Yes! While you may not need another toaster oven, you can register for “fun” gifts, such as camping equipment, beach gear, etc. You may also choose to register with a favorite charity so guests can make donations.
The Marriage Licence
Generally, you’ll go through the same application process for your second license as you did for your first, however you will need your divorce decree or spouse certificate of death, whichever is applicable. Call your local county clerk’s office for more information if necessary.
The Theme
“Low-key”? “Modest’? These words don’t have to go with your second wedding. While second weddings do tend to be more intimate affairs with fewer guests, there’s no reason not to throw a huge shindig if you want one. You’re celebrating your union, so don’t hold back!
The Prenup
While hardly everyone’s favorite subject, if you have considerable wealth, property, etc., have a discussion with your lawyer. This is also important if you have children and are concerned about their future.
The Counseling
Counseling could be helpful in the easing of certain doubts, many of which result from the dissolution of your first marriage. Find a counselor you feel comfortable with and get to work settling those fears.
The Children
Again, if you have children, it’s important to incorporate them into your second wedding ceremony. Ideas include:
- Make your kiddies flower girls, ring bearers, junior bridesmaids…you get the idea.
- Trust them with responsibilities, such as handing out programs and greeting guests upon arrival.
- Have them join you at the alter for exchanging family-themed vows.
The Honeymoon
Be sure to have one! If you have children, you don’t have to bring them, but you can plan a kid-friendly vacation if you wish. This will definitely help family members connect!
Whatever else, remember to have fun!! Enjoy!
