Skip The Trends and Choose Timeless Classics in Neutral Hues

When you’re dreaming of your first kitchen as newlyweds, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest design trends (remember when mint-colored appliances were in style?), but to get the most mileage out of your wedding gifts, choosing classic, timeless options – especially in appliances and small electrics – is going to be your best bet to ensure your wedding gifts will be enjoyed for years to come.

Keeping your kitchen basics neutral (appliances, dishes, flatware, etc.) and minimalist allows you to add pops of color in other ways that are affordable and easily interchangeable, such as colorful linens, seasonal serving pieces and decor. Plus, you won’t end up hiding them in the cabinet because they’re no longer in style.

Start with the Small Appliances

Most couples register for small appliances like blenders, mixers, toasters and coffeemakers, all of which are essential for setting up a functional kitchen. Start building your registry with the kitchen electrics and choose a neutral, cohesive color and style for all of your electrics so that A) they won’t look outdated in a few years’ time and B) they can stick with you through a move to a new home or a remodel.

I happen to really like a sleek white finish on small appliances, and due to the unfading popularity of white kitchen design, companies like Braun are releasing new products with a white finish. The look of a light and bright kitchen may change somewhat as styles evolve, but the appeal is enduring. Not to mention it makes small spaces look larger!

Invest in Quality, Not Quantity

It might be tempting to register for full sets of cookware or knives – after all, they are a good deal – but in practicality, you’ll only use some of the pieces from each set on a regular basis, leaving the rest of them to collect dust or take up room in your cabinets.

You’re much better off to select individual items, even if they are a little more expensive on their own, because the quality and longevity will more than make up for the added expense. And don’t feel guilty about adding slightly pricier items to your registry list – your wedding is an occasion when people are happy to splurge on a gift to make the newlyweds happy.

For cookware, the most important items you can register for would be stainless or nonstick skillets in several sizes, along with several saucepans, a large stockpot and a dutch oven. That should accommodate most cooking needs, and if you choose good quality, heavy-bottomed pieces, they’ll last for years! Nonstick, regardless of quality, will inevitably show wear and will need to be replaced more quickly.

For knives, select a chef’s knife or two, a paring knife, a serrated knife and a boning knife. There are many styles to choose from (santoku, katana, etc.), but those basics are what you need to equip your kitchen. And don’t forget a knife sharpener, which will keep those quality knives in tip-top shape for years.

Register for What You Want, Not What You’re “Supposed” To

At some point, it became an almost foregone conclusion that every couple had to register for certain items (remember when cash gifts were considered tacky, too?), but times have changed, and you shouldn’t feel obligated to register for fine china just because your parents and grandparents did when they got married. In fact, dual-purpose dinnerware is a much smarter option. You’ll need at least four settings, but most couples opt for six to eight to allow for the occasional dinner party or family gathering.

Basic white dinnerware (again, neutral colors) can be dressed up for more formal occasions or used in everyday dining. You can’t lose with good quality white dinnerware and simple stainless flatware that will stand the test of time. Plus, as an added bonus, if anything gets broken down the road, it’s a lot easier to replace a piece here and there.

Register Together

It’s easy to let the task of registering for gifts fall to just one person, but it’s so much better if you work together to select them. Imagine your ideal dinner party or the first family holiday gathering you’ll host together, and think about what items would make those celebrations memorable for the two of you. If mixing cocktails is your thing, register for some top-notch barware. Or if you’re more into baking at the holidays, register for the stand mixer you’ve had your eye on. Keep the life you’re building together in mind, and you can’t go wrong!
