Beth and Chris’ wedding took place on a gorgeous fall day at her family’s lakeside cabin in Vermont! After the ceremony, the adventurous couple climbed on top of a floating platform in the middle of the lake for some unforgettable wedding photos by Jaclyn Schmitz Photography. Their wedding theme was The Great Gatsby with a twist: they incorporated their love for geek culture by creating table numbers named after famous TV and literary couples, and Beth even had a TARDIS sticker on the bottom of her purple TOMS! She also made all the bouquets by hand using fabric and jewels. Halfway through the reception, Beth surprised Chris by changing into a flapper dress and making a dramatic entrance to the song “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)” from The Great Gatsby movie soundtrack.
A beautiful autumn Gatsby wedding with a geeky twist in Brandon, VT
I chose the Gatsby theme because I have always loved that book. I became fascinated with the Jazz Age after reading it for the first time and love to have a fun time. I knew I wanted my wedding to feel like a Gatsby party to a certain extent. I love the extravagance and glitzy-ness of it all. I was very fortunate in the fact that the new Gatsby movie had come out and made the 1920s super popular and accessible again right before our wedding – it really helped in finding details to fit our theme. I wanted it to be in Vermont because that is my special place. A big part of my family’s history is at our cabin – my grandmother and aunt’s ashes were spread there, my dad proposed to my mom there, and a lot of memories growing up happened there. I wanted to combine the relaxing “chill” mode of our lake and nature with the bling and epicness of Gatsby. I think I made that happen.
I knew I wanted personal details that, looking back, I wouldn’t regret including. I wanted things that meant something to Chris and I both – my brother making our “guestbook,” one of our close friends designing our invitations, my cousin singing our first dance, an all mother son first dance to Footloose, etc. These are things that, when I look back on that day 50 years from now, I’ll be glad I had them. I wanted everyone to be comfortable and have fun and really have the day reflect Chris and my own personalities. That’s why I had a Tardis for my something blue, wore TOMS instead of fancy heels, and why we had famous couple names as our table markers. I wanted it to be uniquely us, and those were the details I focused on the most. I also put a lot of faith in my Mom, who really did a lot of the details – she did ALL our centerpieces and all the decorations at the cabin. I gave her an idea of what I wanted, but she did all of that on her own. I tried really hard not to have a “picture perfect idea” of what I wanted. At the end of our day, I was married to my best friend and that was all I needed to focus on.
Chris and I are very lucky to have so many people in our lives who put so much effort in to making this my dream wedding. They really and truly did give me my dream wedding, too. It was perfect! Oh, and pinterest. Without pinterest, I would not have been able to make all the small details we had happen! – Beth
