Your Elopement Etiquette Guide

elope

Was your first wedding an exhausting affair? Do you want to skip the whole shabang entirely this time and elope? Before you leave on a jet plane for Vegas, keep in mind your friends and family might take your elopement, er, not well. Avoid this by keeping the following etiquette tips in mind….it will soothe all the feathers around you!

Invite A Select Few

Okay, this kind of flies in the face of the whole elopement concept, but really, what’s the harm of having your closest family and friends with you? Everyone else will understand that you wanted to keep your nuptials small and private. You might have to justify why some people were invited and others weren’t, but that’s the name of elopement game.

Throw A Reception

Just because you got married quietly doesn’t mean you can’t throw a huge party in celebration of your love. If you want to have a reception, do it as quickly after your marriage as possible. This prevents hurt feelings and allows everyone to have a great time. Make it as formal or casual as you want, in the venue you want, with the food you want…you get the idea. Just remember to send invitations! Besides, receptions equal gifts. Lots of gifts.

Tell Them In Person

If you decide to forgo inviting anyone to your wedding and don’t want to have a reception, tell your family and friends about your elopement in person. Don’t call, don’t text, and for God’s sake don’t send a mass email.

Decide If Eloping Is What You Really Want

Taking the time to consider if eloping is what you really and truly want is definitely worth it. As impulsive and romantic as an elopement is, having a simple wedding that lacks annoying bells and whistles is another option. It’s your Big Day, so you can do whatever you want. Don’t feel pressured into planning an intricate ceremony or anything that’s related to one! If you still want to elope, that’s just fine, but keep the above tips in mind.

Above all, have fun!
