Ellen and George’s elegant Seattle celebration included many creative DIY details in pink, ranging from vintage décor to handmade macaron favors. Ellen’s feather-topped gown was a real showstopper, and the Century Ballroom was the perfect locale for their reception with its 1920s-era charm! Meredith McKee Photography captured their DIY wedding.
An elegant DIY pink ballroom wedding in Seattle, WA
My grandmother made my veil for me! I wanted the elegance and delicate feeling of a single, un-embellished layer of tulle – they just don’t sell those, so she made it for me. Both my grandmothers, my mother, and my sister all slaved whole days away at making the beautiful, PERFECT French macarons that we gave away as wedding favors! Macarons are the most difficult cookies to hand-make, and they ended up nailing them. The table decor was all just pulled from the groom’s family’s personal collection of antique cameras and typewriters and such, so that was handy, and gave a nice vintage flair which complemented the 1920s building the reception was held in. A wonderful lady from our church donated dried French lavender and Turkish rose petals, which we wrapped in tulle to be tossed as George and I exited the venue.
Sometimes DIY is way harder than just BUYING things. DIY can sometimes help save money, but sometimes it can be way more work for you and your family than the small personal touch is worth. I wanted George and I’s wedding not to just feel like the most expensive party we would ever throw, but the grand, beautiful, sacred, covenantal moment in time that it was. I wanted the wedding to reflect that ideal, and I think we pulled it off. Favorite moments of the day: Driving around a foggy valley at 50 miles an hour at 4:30 AM with my sister, sticking my head out the window, trying to dry my hair quickly. At the climax of my processional, the double doors opened and my dad and I stepped through. The moment was magical, and it was the highlight for most of the guests as well. I also got stuck trying to get back into my wedding dress after a bathroom break, and my sister and I ended up dying of laughter, trapped in the tiny bathroom stall, surrounded by tulle. Embrace the unexpected small things that don’t go as you imagined. They can end up being the most special moments of your wedding. – Ellen
