From Louise, the Wedding and Bridal Fashion Collection photographer:
When I do a bridal fashion story, I always aim to tell stories that express the feeling behind the designs themselves, making strong compositions in uniquely beautiful and fascinating locations. In this case, the designs were a blend of intimate delicacy and raw feminine strength; and the location was an abandoned villa under a heavy Italian sun. The designs were by contemporary, luxury designers who aren’t afraid to be bold and ambitious with their creations.
I wanted to make this work to showcase not only the beautiful gowns but also the incredible lighting that exists in these crumbling corners of Italy. The name “Chiaroscuro” refers to the artistic practice of “light and shade”. My aim was to create a strong and modern take on bridal fashion, using geometric direct light and juxtaposing it with the ancient environment that the villa presented. As photographers, we are sometimes afraid of trying new lighting techniques but working with film and direct hard light was something I’ve wanted to do for a while. Doing so pushed me out of my comfort zone and expanded my vision. The rooms in the villa held such energy from times gone by that it energized me, and I was able to capture the whole shoot in less that an hour!
We’re set to spend a lot of time this year in Italy and I’m already dreaming of the light there – and what I’ll make next…
