This bold, dramatic bridal inspiration shoot from Italian photographer Andrea Fusaro celebrates the non-traditional with gothic bridal attire and a moody photography style. The model, Laura, shares her inspiration for the shoot: “At some point in my life, I felt the need to externalize the parts of myself that I had always kept hidden. I was never a really ‘goth,’ even if I’ve been a big fan of Robert Smith and The Cure since my teenage years. I’m a drummer in a rock band and, more recently, I’ve developed a passion for electric guitar. Over the years, I came to appreciate the cinematographic work of Tim Burton and an idea slowly grew inside me to be the protagonist of a photoshoot created around this type of atmosphere. I thought that it could be interesting to be able to set the entire thing where I was born, in Italy, in the Po River delta and the lagoons only a short distance from Venice. It’s a perfect place for this shoot because it’s sparsely populated and far away from major tourism. Nature is the hostess here, and seeing that A Forest is one of my favorite The Cure songs, I thought that it would be interesting to set part of the photoshoot among the trees.”
A gothic bridal inspiration shoot in Italy
I had already decided that the theme needed to revolve around the moment in which Edward Scissorhands, the protagonist, says “I’m Not Complete,” because that’s exactly how I had felt for years.
Slowly, these ideas took form. And after I had met Alessia (the event planner), and spoke to her for a long time, we decided to go ahead with it. Her enthusiasm gave me courage and that’s how we involved Andrea (the photographer) and Chiara and Alessandra (MUA and hairstylist).
We chose to create a photoshoot that would be an inspiration for alternative brides (ones who aren’t in love with the classic white dress), providing several tips for the details. Alessia designed everything – from the dresses to the jewelry and even the flowers – with the intention of giving value to those things that we women often find in our closets but aren’t able to recognize their true potential.
