As a wedding baker and florist, Candice of Pollen and Pastry has been dreaming up her own wedding for years! She and Stephen tied the knot amidst an abundance of flowers and a phenomenal dessert table in a beautiful and classic palette of marsala, black and white. Pam Cooley Photography captured their day!
A classic travel themed wedding in Davenport, IA
The Proposal
“Stephen and I were engaged at La Jolla Cove in San Diego on my birthday. I knew I wanted to go somewhere fun for my birthday, and since Stephen was living in Phoenix, it made sense to just take a quick drive over to California to celebrate.
On my birthday, we started the day with breakfast at the hotel and took a walk along the shore, heading down towards the cove since I wanted to see the sea lions. Once at the cove, we climbed up the pier (which was actually closed off for construction) so we could get a better view of the sea lions. I knew something was up because Stephen was acting funny and he had taken my phone so I would stop taking pictures for some reason. I was watching the sea lions and when I turned around, he was down on one knee. I have no idea what he said after that, just that I said yes!
Apparently Stephen had asked my dad for permission at Easter and every time we were together after that he had the ring in his pocket, just waiting for the right time and location. He picked a pretty good one!”
The Inspiration
“The color scheme for the wedding, which included marsala, black and white with gold accents, was inspired by my desire for something different. As a wedding vendor, I get burned out on the popular colors and themes pretty quickly, so I knew I didn’t want to do something I had already done. Hello, no more blush weddings please! There was a bit of a travel theme to the wedding as well, which was an ode to Stephen and I’s love for travel. Let the adventure begin!
Stephen and I love going to flea markets together and many of the details at the wedding were bought on those bargain hunting trips. The guest book globes, which were customized by local calligrapher Emily, of Dashwood Shop, were some of my favorite finds. Others include the vintage luggage on the dessert table, vintage milk glass containers for the florals, and especially chosen broaches that fit each of the bridesmaid’s personalities that were added to their bouquets.”
The Attire
“When planning the wedding, I knew that I wanted Stephen to be in classic black and white with a bow tie and I wanted something simple for my dress. I never thought that I would go for the larger skirt, more princess style dress, but I just loved the simplicity of the dress I chose and it felt like a wedding dress should! And it had pockets which was a must! The necklace I wore on the big day was the one that my mother wore on her wedding day, 34 years before.”
The Flowers
“As a wedding baker and florist myself, I’ve been dreaming up my own wedding for YEARS and it turned out just how I imagined, with an overload of flowers and a giant dessert table. I was asked numerous times leading up to my wedding whether I would do my own cake and flowers for my wedding and of course the answer was YES! How could I not, it’s my passion!
I couldn’t have done it without my amazing team of floral friends though! With a team of 4 flower friends and a load of family help, we worked for three full days at the venue to get it all done and to transform the space into my dream wedding. Before that, hours and hours of DIY projects and prep work led up to that week. With the groom living thousands of miles away working in Phoenix, AZ during our engagement, that was more difficult than usual!”
The Cake & Favors
“The reception, complete with cupcake wall photo booth, was filled with candlelight and the bride’s custom rock music wedding dinner playlist. The dessert table was filled with an abundance of cupcakes, cookies, macarons, brownies, donuts and two wedding cakes, because one just isn’t enough!
Our favors were little succulents that I potted up into gold votive holders with a little sign bought on Etsy.”
