This beautiful, retro-styled picnic elopement inspiration shoot from Shunkwiler Photo and Julie D’Agostino Designs was inspired by Morris Louis’ 1960s painting, “The Point of Tranquility.” Blending vintage, casual apparel for the bride and groom with gorgeous tropical flowers and the perfect lakeside picnic, the shoot is full of vibrant color and charm!
A 1960s picnic elopement styled shoot in Doylestown, PA
This shoot was all about color! Morris Louis’ 1960s painting, the Point of Tranquility, creates a sea of color that draws you into its beauty. We also wanted to introduce a bit of retro whimsy, with our fried chicken dinner, orange soda cocktail, painted branch lined aisle, and of course the sunset fishing!
We aimed for a vintage casual style with the bride’s gauzy loose Free People dress, fresh flower choker, Twiggy-esque bold lashes and intricate braided blonde hair. For even more color accents, the bride was decked out with a spessartine garnet and yellow sapphire engagement ring, an Edwardian opal and diamond halo right-hand ring, and vintage mid-century carnelian earrings. The groom wore olive chino shorts, and instead of a boutonniere, he donned an ankle bracelet of flowers! We are so hoping ankle bracelets are the new boutonnieres.
Most of the furniture was scoured from thrift stores, from the lemon yellow table to the bar cart to the rattan wicker cart. Lots of mismatched colorful glass containers were illuminated by the sun reflecting off the lake.
The ceremony took place at the water’s edge, in front of a DIY abstract painting adorned with garland and colorful blooms. The couple exchanged vows written on colorful acrylic sheets in vibrant green ink.
Even the dessert was a true work of art! The hand painted colorful cutting cake was topped with a custom laser cut topper. The elopement announcements featured fun bright mixed prints and colors, with delicate copper lettering. And the best part – after dinner, the bride and groom cast a line and caught a fish! – Julie
